A New Broadway Show that's sure to make you fall out of your Seat!
If you are looking for classic theatre with highbrow sensibilities, then ‘Something Rotten’ is not the Broadway show for you. If like most of us, you are looking for an uproariously funny and entertaining night, then you MUST go see this new musical. ‘Something Rotten’ takes the Shakespearean era and turns it on its head with hilarious parodies of Broadway musicals of the past, lively song and dance numbers, and a refreshingly carefree style.
The basic plot is centered around two bothers Nick and Nigel Bottom in South London during the Tudor era who are trying to succeed in a theatre world dominated by newcomer, and former troupe member, William Shakespeare. They must come up with a play idea that the Bard has not done yet or face losing their patronage.
Nick, in particular, harbors a deep envy for Shakespeare, who he skewers as an arrogant snob who purposely tries to seem smarter than he really is by making the audience feel dumb. Nigel is actually a fan and the main writer of the brother writing duo. He is a romantic and idealist that often tries to get his more hardened brother to admit and appreciate the genius of Shakespeare’s works.
In desperation, Nick secretly takes the savings his wife Bea has been putting aside to pay for a fortune teller to find out the plot of what will be Shakespeare’s most famous play, which at the time has not been written yet. Nostradamus proceeds over the course of the production to give Nick details about ‘Omelet’. Hilarity ensues, and in the process, the musical is born.
There is much more to this play, but not wanting to reveal and potentially ruin anyone’s theatre going experience, we will just have to leave it at that. If you want to spend a few hours listening to catchy show tunes and fall out of your seat laughing, then get yourself tickets to see ‘Something Rotten’, now playing at the St. James Theatre.
