Taking place two times per year, New York Now is a massive home furnishings, gift, jewelry, and fashion show hosted in New York City. This year, the Javitz Center was packed with thousands of brands selling the latest in home. From textiles and ceramics to fine jewelry and stationary, every category was represented, and product made by artisan makers and multi-national brands alike.
Industry professionals from all over the world, and representing some of the globe’s largest retailers and distributors of home products gather here to see what is to come in the next year of product and innovation.
On day two of the show, we had a chance to listen in on a panel by some of the industry’s most well-known professionals on what is to come in one of the most important aspects of interior design for 2020 and beyond: color. “Color Trends in Home” was an all-star panel, moderated by Stacey Garcia (CEO of trend report firm Stacey Garcia Inc.) and enlisted Nancy Fire, Creative Director of Design Works International to lead the trend talk. Nancy was joined by Patti Carpenter, Global Trend Ambassador for Carpenter + Company and Lucinda Loya from Lucinda Loyer Interiors.
If you’re looking to update your interiors anytime soon — or just a small update— here’s what you’ve got to know when choosing your color scheme.

If you’re looking to update your interiors anytime soon — or just a small update— here’s what you’ve got to know when choosing your color scheme.
Earth Tones
As the world looks to become more sustainable, interior design professionals are turning to the earth for major inspiration. These are colors that are made from and of the natural soils, grasses, and plants that power our earth. Think deep browns and greens with muted oranges and naturals like beige and tan. These colors work great in a white or neutral room as a muted pop of color.
Pattern Play
News flash: wallpaper is back. Using patterns to create dimension inside of your home — in neutral or bold colors — is making a comeback. Geometric shapes, florals, and even insects can be used to add accents to a lack-luster space or bring the outside in. The great thing about patterned wallpaper is that the boldness can be determined solely by what you’re comfortable living with.
Create Drama
Safe gray, white, and black color schemes seem to be on their way out and back to 2010. Dramatic colors are on their way in. Think dark walls accented with lush textiles like wool and velvet. Colors like navy, cobalt, and deep teal. These colors can be used to accentuate depth in a space and to create a cozy feeling that is still elegant and luxurious.
These were the top three trends in color all panelists seemed to agree were here to stay. Which one will you incorporate next?
