Nicholas K SS17 NYFW Runway Show

On Thursday, Nicholas K kicked off New York Fashion Week with their Ready to Wear Spring ’17 Collection at Moynihan Station. The desert-themed collection was filled with loose silhouettes, nudes, and luxurious fabrics. Designers of Nicholas K, Nicholas and Christopher, were greatly inspired by the movie “Theeb” which portrays life of the Bedouin Culture in the Wadi Rum.
Textiles used throughout the collection included artisan woven fabrics, organic cottons, vegetable-dyed leathers, and alpaca. Notable trends were nude colors, loose and airy fits, fanny packs, floppy hats and statement jewelry. Makeup was done by Stila, nails were done by Miss Pop and hair was crafted by the one-and-only, Giannandrea. Giannandrea is a celebrity hairstylist and the Creative Director of Macadamia. Giannandrea and Nicholas mutually agreed upon using a high ponytail for the show. Models sported sleek, high ponytails with hair wrapped around the base of each ponytail. Backstage before the show, Giannandrea and his team from Macadamia made magic happen by perfectly crafting each ponytail uniform to each other. Hair was done using Macadama hair products and tools in addition to hair extensions when needed. We had the pleasure of watching Giannandrea at work backstage and were able to grab a quick interview with him. Urban Milan: How long have you been in this industry? Giannandrea: Hair total just about 30 years but fashion just about 25. I started as a young man in Italy when I was 18 in Milan. I started doing my first shows back in the late 80’s early 90’s. Always in this part of the industry (I did) freelancing, photo-shoots, magazines, and celebrities. I’m doing a lot of celebrities right now besides fashion week. |
UM: Who was your favorite celebrity that you have worked with?
G: That’s always the toughest question to answer! But you know I have to say Drew Barrymore. I’ve worked with Drew for many many years and Cameron Diaz—that whole group. I’ve also worked with Christina Aguilera and a lot of the music/pop girls.
UM: What is your favorite hairstyle of all time?
G: Actually I’m doing one of my favorites today, which is a high pony. I’ve always loved ponytails, they’re always so challenging. They have a thing—girls that do ponytails always kind of feel sassy and great. They’re done beautifully, especially top ponies. They’re very special. They’re elegant, they’re chic, they’re sporty, they’re everything.
UM: What is your favorite part about what you do?
G: It’s just meeting amazing people. Amazing talented women, creating styles, just making people feel great. That’s always the great connection. I like to channel that when I work with my clients.
UM: How did you get started working with Macadamia?
G: It started about three years ago when I met the CEO.
UM: What are your favorite Macadamia products?
G: The Volumizing Mousse is definitely one of my all time favorites. I can do so much with just one product. Flex Hold hairspray is really incredible too. The Nourishing Oil, as well, is one of my all time favorites just because the kind of texture I can give. It benefits both the styling and the hair so it’s just a great all-around product.
UM: What products are you using today?
G: Flex Hold Hairspray, Nourishing Oil and lots of texture as well.
UM: What are some tips for keeping your hair healthy?
G: Well its really good food first of all, it starts with a great diet. Then, (using) really good products. Macadamia has a really great range of products.
It was clear that Giannandrea is passionate. He is a truly genuine person who takes great care in everything he does. It was such a privilege to be able to see him at work at Nicholas K. The ponytails on the models really complimented the sleek, effortlessly chic, desert-themed aesthetic.
