Shahrukh Khan and Kajol Devgan
“My name is Khan and I am not a terrorist” are the words that echo throughout the thought-provoking latest release by Karan Johar. “My Name is Khan” is not your typical Bollywood musical romance full of lip-synching and dance sequences; it is a reality check in this post 9/11 world. The story starts off with Rizwan Khan (Shahrukh Khan) narrating his journey to meet the President of the United States, as the movie progresses we are introduced to Rizwan’s childhood and his struggles as a child living with Asperger’s Syndrome.
We discover that even though Rizwan is challenged, he is just as talented and even more intelligent than the average individual. Rizwan eventually meets a woman, Mandira (Kajol Devgan) who becomes the love of his life, through this relationship he learns a lot about love, family and eventually about religious differences when his Muslim ideologies and beliefs are challenged.
The movie raises awareness on how innocent victims are attacked based on their religious beliefs and values, and that regardless of who you are or what religion you follow you should respect all. This intense, emotionally-charged movie is a must-see for powerful performances, beautiful music and an inspiring message.

The Journey of a Khan: Shahrukh Khan
“The journey through the eyes of this character that I so closely lived made me realize that you can be very special by being ordinary. The shooting of the film took us all around America (which was pleasant except for the cold in L.A) and I saw that the mainstay of the film - Islam and the Western World - has a surprisingly honest and balanced outlook amongst the Americans, especially all the crew that worked with us. They understood that in a war that was not started by either side, the lives being lost on both sides deserve equal empathy respect and regard. They understand too, as Plato wrote, “It is only the dead that have seen the end of war.” The sooner we can stop this meaningless strife the happier our lives will be.”
The Journey of a Director: Karan Johar
“I wondered what that kind of stress and fear would do to a Hindu-Muslim couple,” says Johar. “Would the unrest outside creep into their homes and question the foundation of their marriage? Would the Hindu wife blame her Muslim husband for the questioning and sneering they would face because of a last name? The story of this couple and the ways in which their lives would have changed made me want to explore the social landscape of America through the eyes of an innocent couple caught up in the extremities of politics and propaganda.”
