Just under two weeks old, Marcha Cocina has already made a mark in the East Village dining scene! This new Spanish tapas restaurant has a unique twist with a Latin flair and is located in the heart of East Village on 111 Avenue C, New York, NY.
If you remember the popular Pipa Restaurant in New York City, you would be familiar with a lot of the menu items, as some of the chefs have moved to this new restaurant. Their sangria recipe was also brought to Marcha Cocina, which take it from us is one of the best sangrias we have ever had!
We started our Spanish journey with a Croqueta Sampler, the restaurant carries three varieties of Croquetas which include goat cheese (Bolas de Queso Cabra), mushroom (Hongos) and Chicken (Pollo y Platano). Our favorite was the Hongos which was a wild mushroom croqueta with thyme, rosemary, and truffle trumpet aioli. We continued with four additional tapas which included:
- Chorizo - a savory Spanish sausage
- Patatas Bravas - potatoes that were drenched in a delicious brava aioli
- Champinones al Ajillo - three types of mushrooms that were swimming in a delicious blend of garlic, white wine and olive oil.
- Piggyback Dates - Bacon-wrapped dates filled with almonds and topped with a valdeon cheese, these literally melt in your mouth.
If your not familiar with tapas, they are small plates, which allows you to try a variety of different dishes and are meant to be shared. They typically recommend four tapas per couple. Our meal continued with the Churrasco, which is a skirt steak covered in a cheese fondue and chimichurri standing atop a bed of fried yucca. The restaurant also carries a unique variety of flat breads called "Cocas" which include three different types: wild mushroom, chorizo and a grilled steak selection. Our meal ended with a tasty Bread Pudding with Banana Ice Cream.
Marcha Cocina has an excellent selection of dishes with an expansive menu where there is something for everyone. The quality of the food and the presentation make this restaurant an excellent choice for a late lunch or dinner. The restaurant is moderately priced - tapas range from $7-$12. The restaurant is open Sunday through Thursday from 3- 11 PM and Friday through Saturday from 3- 12 AM. They are planning to add a Saturday brunch in the future.
