What are Lash Extensions?
Eyelash extensions are semi-permanent lashes that are hand-glued on top of your natural lashes. They are made from different materials such as mink, silk, synthetic, human or horse hair. They can be applied individually or in clusters. Amazing Lash Studio recommends and uses synthetic individually glued lashes. The application process can take up to three hours to apply for the first full set but they look very natural! The lash extensions are applied by using a cyanoacrylate adhesive on the extension that is glued to your natural lash 1-2 mm from the base thus never making contact with the eyelid. If you have sensitive eyes ask if there is a lighter glue option without formaldehyde.
Do Lash Extensions Damage Your Natural Lashes?
If applied correctly and properly, lash extensions are safe and do not ruin the health of your natural lashes. Be sure not to rub your eyes or tug or pull on the extensions because this can cause lash loss and even damage to your natural lashes. If lashes are applied properly and to each individual lash, they will only fall out during your natural lash growth cycle. Eyelash extensions are not dangerous if your technician is following the correct methods and using the proper materials. Before your appointment, ask the salon about the ingredients in the lash adhesive they use and if they can do a patch test to see if you have any allergic reactions to their glue.
How Much do Lash Extensions Cost?
Lash extension pricing is dependent on where you live, Amazing Lash Studio offers them for $89 as an introductory rate. They have over 200 locations across the United States. On average most salons charge anywhere from $100 to $400 plus tip. Every few weeks depending on your natural lash shedding cycle, you will need a fill-in to replace the lashes that fall out. This treatment costs on average between $50 - $160.
How Long do Lash Extensions Last?
With proper care, lash extensions should last for up to six weeks depending on your natural lash growth and shedding cycle. To keep your look lasting indefinitely, you will have to schedule a fill-in every few weeks.
How Do You Take Care of Your Lash Extensions?
When your lash extensions are first applied do not get them wet for 48 hours. According to Amazing Lash Studio, you should clean your lashes twice a day to remove pollen, dust, or make-up buildup. They offer a special lash foaming cleanser that you can use in addition to other tools to keep your lashes clean and groomed. Lashes can get tangled when you are sleeping or showering, so you must gently brush your lashes with a clean spoolie brush when you wake up, after you shower (when they are dry) and at the end of the day. Do not use any oil-based products near your eyes including make-up or cleansers. Amazing Lash Studio offers oil-free mascara, eyeliner and more. Also to prevent any unnecessary tangling at night, sleep on your back or side and use a silk pillowcase which is gentler on extensions and on your hair.
What to Avoid Once You Have Lash Extensions
Once you have your gorgeous lash extensions you must avoid excessive exposure to heat and steam. You can swim, shower, exercise and go about any other daily activities. You also need to be gentle with your eyes - no rubbing or picking on your eyelashes as you can pull out the extension along with your natural eyelashes. Never attempt to remove eyelash extensions or add more hairs by yourself. If you need to remove them for any reason, contact your salon and make an appointment for removal. For emergencies you can use coconut oil to remove lashes, however this is not an easy process and can damage your natural lashes.
How Do You Know If You are Having an Allergic Reaction?
An allergic reaction to eyelash extensions can occur in one or both of your eyes. Typical symptoms include redness, itchiness, burning and swelling that occurs on the eyelid or the eye itself. This is why a patch test is recommended prior to applying a full set. Most allergies are reactions to the adhesive, that is why it is best to ask what type of adhesive the salon is using prior to your appointment. If you do have an allergic reaction call the salon immediately and explain your symptoms. There are some products that can help alleviate the pain including topical hydrocortisone cream, allergy eye drops or oral antihistamine product like Benadryl.
There is a lot to think about and learn about lash extensions prior to making an appointment. Once you have decided that you are comfortable with the cost and maintenance, make sure to find the right specialist and have a consultation. We highly recommend Amazing Lash Studio for their expertise and cleanliness!
