Struggles in School and How to Avoid Them

From the moment I was born, my parents knew they wanted me to have it all. My dad purchased a lot and built a home in one of the best school districts in our area, but my mom was determined to homeschool me, so that no one else would be in charge of my education. This idea she had did not sit well with my dad. She did not have a college degree, did not know how to teach, and honestly, was not great at time management. He thought it would be best to have someone that studied education and did it everyday to teach me.
Even though my dad was pretty against the idea of homeschooling, he still gave my mom the chance. For three and a half years. And he was right - homeschooling was definitely not her calling and I was behind because of it. I remember sitting in my third grade classroom and being called out because I did not know basic math skills like everyone else. We would do multiplication problems aloud in our room - the teacher would post a problem on the board and would then call on a student to answer it. |
Naturally, I got called over and over since I did not know how to do the problems. She was drilling me because she thought it would teach me how to solve it. Everyone else had the numbers memorized and down pact, so in order to teach me, she was doing what she thought was best.
Unfortunately, that is not how I learn and I did not have the essential building blocks under my belt that were taught to the other kids when they were younger, so her idea of how I should learn did not work for me, so I continued to struggle. I struggled all the way through elementary school (somehow making it by).
My dad knew I was struggling and tried to help as much as he could, so in middle school, he decided to send me to the best private school in the area. This was a true blessing. The teachers were patient and knew what they were doing. I went to an after school tutoring session and started excelling in school. In fact, I was succeeding so much that they decided when middle school was over to send me back to the public school system again for high school.
In high school, my first few years were rough. There was a lot of math and I still really struggled with it. Thankfully, my dad was there to help. He hired a tutor to help and he helped me at home a lot. They learned how I learned and taught it to me, outside of the classroom. I learn best by doing - show me and then let me do it and teach it, and I will be fine. Although I still struggled with math throughout high school (and even now) because of my first few years, I made it through high school and went on to graduate college with a degree in Early Childhood Education. My goal all throughout college was to teach others that had struggles that were similar to mine. My story has a happy ending - I found people that could help me succeed and it changed everything for me.
So, how can you help your children avoid a struggle in school, like I had? If you notice that your children are struggling, all you have to do is find them help that can teach them how to learn properly, according to what works best for them. In New Jersey, there is actually a company called Empowered Learning Transformation Centers that does this very thing. According to their website, “Documented studies reveal that the current generation of students in the U.S. is substantially less educated than previous generations. SAT scores in critical reading are lower than they have been in 50 years, according to the College Board, and math and writing scores are also trending downward.” Empowered Learning Transformation Centers have helped learners break through to peak performance levels in the areas of learning, focus, and attention for over twenty years. Co-founder, Peter Riddle is a recognized expert in self-development field, parental involvement in children’s learning, and strategies that facilitate learning where traditional classroom methods have failed. His skills along with the Empowered Learning™ Program method have provided so many with the skills it takes to learn effectively.
Remember - no matter how much your child/children struggle with school, there is a way to break free from it. I was able to do so by getting help, outside of the traditional school system and you are able to do that for your children, as well. Just pay attention to how they are doing and what their needs are and you will get through it.
