Draupadi - Will my spirit live on? is a production by Shivani Wazir Pasrich currently playing at the Roy Arias Theatre. It is a dynamic play which weaves the epic and iconic Draupadi in a contemporary setting. Draupadi in the Mahabharata is the epitome of femininity, resilience and unbending will. Arguably one of the reasons for which the Mahabharata occurred, she was gambled away by her 5 husbands with the winner finding pleasure in ridiculing her and dishonoring her among society. Draupadi called on Krishna to come to her aid.
The play intertwines Draupadi’s plight in that of Maaya, a modern day newlywed. Maaya experiences lead her to an internal struggle weighing revenge versus resiliency. She sways from suicide to murder with Draupadi serving as her spiritual guide. But the intricacy of the dialogue is apparent as Draupadi re-examines the same internal struggle from her epic plight. It is through Krishna who guides Draupadi and Maaya to choose a path which is suitable for both to exude the Indian woman’s strength, shakti and ability to carry on.
