The sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) has witnessed a dramatic rise in popularity in the latter half of first decade of this millenium, spearheaded by the success of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). While there has been a rapid rise in the number of eyeballs watching the once fledgling sport, it still has much room to grow into mainstream acceptance in the United States, and has tremendous space to flourish internationally.
Numerous businesses have emerged out of the MMA boom, from new promotions, websites, supplements, and a clothing lines. One of the fashion brands, Desi Fighter, strikes a chord with South Asian MMA enthusiasts. Founder Jatinder Dhoot answers a few questions for Urban Milan.
Urban Milan: What is Desi Fighter?
Jatinder Dhoot: It's a clothing line that encourages people to fight hard in whatever they do and be proud of who they are, whether they are a mixed martial arts fighter or not. Not everybody is going to compete in mixed martial arts, but many fans are inspired by the acts of greatness displayed in the competition. You don't have to step into a cage to be a fighter--everybody is a fighter in some sense. Everybody has struggles, setbacks and obstacles which have to contend with and overcome. Desi Fighter is just another reminder that you have the fighting spirit inside you to push forward and turn things around.
Urban Milan: What do South Asians think about the line?
Jatinder Dhoot: They love it. There's nothing else like it so they're excited about it. There are many people proud of being fight fans and proud of being South Asian; wearing Desi Fighter doubles their pride and makes them feel good about wearing something they identify with. The most prominent MMA gym in India, Tigers Gym, has a plethora of fighters who love the line. It makes me feel good that they're enjoying and having fun with the brand.
Urban Milan: What is the future of mixed martial arts?
Jatinder Dhoot: There's only room to grow and it's going to be a huge sport internationally. Down the road it will be covered more prominently in the mainstream and begin to develop across the globe and generate tremedous fighters worldwide.
