Want a taste of the Outback without having to travel across the world? Burke and Willis recently opened its doors on the Upper West Side (226 W 79th St., New York, NY) and serves up a taste of fine Australian dining complete with Kangaroo Loin!
The restaurant is a three-in-one dining experience which includes a casual dining area complete with an extensive bar, an upscale dining room and a hidden staircase which leads to a private club called the "Manhattan Cricket Club". The entire venue's decor is influenced by the 1860s gold rush.
The menu includes a wide range of cuisine to suit any palate from an adventurer to a vegetarian. Cuisine choices include exotic meats such as kangaroo, rabbit, Australian lamb; Seafood choices such as oysters, crab, scallops; American fare such as pork, chicken and pasta. One of their famous entrees is their 'Roo burger which is made of Kangaroo meat and topped with tomato jam and shaved onions.
The atmosphere in the fine dining area is cozy and dim lighting. We tried some of their popular dishes which included the Sauteed Scallops with baby beets, Little Gem Salad which had fresh apples, pecorino and candy walnut vinaigrette and the Kangaroo Loin as starters. For those that have not tried Kangaroo, it was very tender and tasted like beef.
For our main course, we had the roasted salmon that included a smoked tomato consomme and the New York Strip Steak which was 21 day dry-aged and included roasted asparagus and spring onion. For dessert we had the Bomboloni which was a light/airy cinnamony dessert with vanilla ice cream.
We followed our meal up with a visit to the exclusive "Manhattan Cricket Club", the venue is stunning and transports you to another era. The cocktails are divine. We fell in love with the "I'll Have Another", which as its name describes is cocktail you will want to keep enjoying- it is made from Santa Teresa 1796 rum, garam masala syrup, fresh lime, club soda and shaved ginger. It was selected as one of the "Top 100 Drinks" in Manhattan by Time Out Magazine and was definitely a drink worth experiencing.
From the ambiance to the entrees- Burke & Willis/Manhattan Cricket Club did not disappoint. With their wide selection of cocktails, starters and entrees- the restaurant is perfect for anyone from an adventure diner to a vegetarian! The kitchen is open seven days a week for cocktails, bar snacks, dinner, late night and weekend brunch: Mon-Wed 4pm-midnight; Thurs-Fri 4pm-2am; Sat 11am-2am, Sun noon-midnight.
