The South Asian community in Vancouver, Canada has been shaken by youth and gang violence. In the last nineteen years more then one-hundred South Asian males in their 20s have been killed, these statistics show the magnitude of this on-going epidemic. Director Mani Amar has extensively researched this topic and has created “A Warrior’s Religion”, which is a documentary filmed in a manner of an unbiased editorial. The documentary emphasizes that a majority of this gang-related violence is within the Sikh community and the director uses his own knowledge and personal experiences to communicate this awareness.
Interviews with community leaders, media personalities, and other prominent figures in the South Asian community paint a very grim picture of this reality. The documentary also contains historical references, news footage, crime statistics, South Asian youth interviews, and cultural comparisons. The film also has an interview with Bal Buttar who was a former notorious gangster that confesses to killing people.
The documentary sheds light to a very serious issue that is plaguing the South Asian community in Vancouver, Canada. The director meets his goal of bringing awareness to anyone who has misconceptions about this culture, including those within the South Asian community itself. The director also makes the viewer aware that gang related violence in Vancouver is growing and needs to be addressed and prevented.
